Evolve & Survive Early-Game Animal Ranks
Survive Hour 1 without donating your worm to a mantis.
Early-game is everything before you own a stag beetle or scorpion. It is Eat Food, first morph, and the first time a thumbnail predator looks at you. If you want late ranks, use best forms. This page exists because most deaths happen while the HUD still says Eat Food (0/5).
Read getting started first. Ranks below assume you already redeemed codes and have not spent the Revives on ego.
Early-game letters
Best openers
- Brown ant (after food) — first body that can threaten a worm and still hide from mantises. Main this until beetle.
- Shrew in desert — only because it is the desert line opener. On grass it is lost.
Playable
- Turtle on the beach — slow, wide, annoying to nibble. Inland it is a snack.
- Purple rat — desert mid. Leave it toward scorpion as soon as the morph is available.
Last
- Pink worm — required, not recommended. Eat, do not duel.
- Any starter that still chases a centipede — this is a player skill issue, not a hidden S-tier.
Mantis, beetle, scorpion, and glowing centipede are not early-game. If you already have them, you opened the wrong page.
Worm hour
Your rank is C and that is fine. Goals:
- Touch five food pickups.
- Do not look at the mantis for longer than it takes to turn.
- Morph.
Worm nibble is not a PvP plan. The official YOU arrow exists so you understand you are bait. If another worm is nearby, you can bully it. If anything else is nearby, you cannot.
Ant hour
Ant is the real early-game. You can finish leftover worms. You can lose to everything in S-tier. Play the lawn and forest. Do not tour the oasis to “see the scorpion.” You will see it. Briefly.
If two ants contest one fruit cube, take the fight. If an ant contests a beetle, take the fruit somewhere else.
Desert openers
Shrew into rat is a worse early combat line than ant, but it is how desert Index slots fill. Play scared, hug cactus only if it breaks line, and evolve off rat. Do not skin the shrew. Shop can wait.
Turtle trap
Players see a shell and assume tank. On sand next to water, turtle is fine. On the worm lawn against a mantis, turtle is an appetizer. If your Index needs the turtle, beach farm it, tick the portrait, and leave. That is collection, covered in the Evolvedex guide, not a main.
Early-game threats (not playable yet)
Treat these as weather:
- Green mantis on the lawn
- Any centipede
- Stag beetle that wandered down from Hour 24
- Scorpion on the oasis rim
You do not outplay weather as a worm. You walk around it. How to play is the longer version of that sentence.
Spending Revives early
Do not. 1kLikes and 2kLikes exist so you still have lives when you reach beetle. The revive planner repeats this because people ignore it. A worm Revive buys you another minute of being bait.
Graduation
You leave this page when:
- Eat Food is routinely finished in the first minute.
- You have ant or rat without panic.
- You own a beetle or you are one morph off scorpion.
Then open best forms and how to evolve. Early-game ranks can stay bookmarked for the next alt, not for the scorpion you just grew.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers players search before they jump back into a server.
What is the best early-game animal?
Brown ant after you finish Eat Food. Worm is a tutorial body, not a main.
Should I play turtle at the start?
Only to tick Index on the beach. Do not main turtle against mantises or beetles.
Is the shrew better than the worm?
In desert, yes, because it starts that line. In grassland, get to ant instead.
When do I stop using this early-game list?
When you own a stag beetle or scorpion. Switch to best forms.
